Session Comments

Water Temp 71 F, Secchi 30", Conductivity 450. Supplemental probe shocked for 12.5 minutes (time not included in total). Sampled 3 rock bass, 5 sand shiners, 24 rainbow darters, 1 banded darter, 1 hornyhead chub, 1 northern hog sucker, 1 johnny darter, 3 carmine shiners, 1 black redhorse, 1 bluntnose minnow, 4 central stonerollers and 4 largescale stonerollers. These fish are included in the data. Took a subsample of stonerollers to ID in the lab and expanded these numbers to all stonerollers collected.

Large River IBI

The Fish Index of Biotic Integrity for Large River sampling sessions is currently calculated using the standard wadeable stream FIBI metrics. The IBI scores for Large River sessions are typically lower than those calculated for wadeable streams, but are included for comparison purposes.

Large Rivers score lower due to the difficulty of sampling deep rivers. Boat shockers are also selective towards larger fish species, as it is more difficult to collect smaller fish species, such as minnows, in the deeper water.

FIBI Score Explained

Sites that score between 71 - 100 are considered excellent. Fish (excluding tolerant species) are fairly abundant or abundant. A high number of native species are present, including many long-lived, habitat specialist, and sensitive species. Sensitive fish species and species of intermediate pollution tolerance are numerically dominant. The three most abundant fish species typically comprise 50% or less of the total number of fish. Top carnivores are usually present in appropriate numbers and multiple life stages. Habitat specialists, such as benthic invertivore and simple lithophilous spawning fish are present at near optimal levels. Fish condition is good; typically less than 1% of total fish exhibit external anomalies associated with disease or stress.

This location has been classified as a survey site. Survey sites are compared to reference sites within the same ecoregion. A reference site represents natural stream qualities that are least disturbed by human activities within the watershed. Reference sites are grouped by ecoregion to establish a benchmark against which these survey streams are compared.

EcoRegion Comparison

Scores for a sampling session are compared against reference sites within the same ecoregion:
