Groundwater capture zones are area projected to the land surface determined to provide water to the wells. Capture zones are determined for each groundwater-based public water supply system using available geologic and hydrogeologic information. Limiting criteria for capture zones include time-of-travel distance and topographically derived areas. Arbitrary fixed radii are used for karst-impacted systems and for systems with inadequate well and geologic data. Susceptibility to contamination from surface sources is determined based on the thickness of confining material above the aquifer.
