4/11/2013 Travis Bell of B & B Metal Recycling in Rowan stated that he had an opportunity to tear down some dilapidated chicken coops for their steel roofs, and wanted to know what disposal options were available. I advised him that agricultural buildings could be burned or buried, or both, with some caveats and provided it was done on the property where the buildings stood. We discussed the asbestos inspection requirements, but Mr. Bell stated the structures were stick frame, unfinished, unlined bare wood. I indicated that he need not conduct an asbestos inspection if that was the case, but that an asbestos inspection would be required if there was any plaster, insulation, or any other building material other than bare wood and sheet steel roof. I went over the setback requirements for both burning and burial, explained that asphalt shingles could be buried but not burned. I also went over the fire department and Sheriff notifications and the burial depth and cover requirements. DAVID MILLER
