Summary
According to the latest monitoring event, nitrite/nitrate is adversely affecting the groundwater at the site. Specifically, nitrite was identified in monitoring well MW2 at 77,000 ug/L. The applicable statewide standard for nitrite is 10,000 ug/L. Also, nitrate contamination was identified in MW2 at 340,000 ug/L and MW5 at 120,000 ug/L. The applicable statewide standard is 56,000 ug/L. Nitrite concentrations have increased at MW2 since the last monitoring event, i.e., nitrate contamination from MW2 in June 2001 was 96,000 ug/L.
Environmental Consultant Terracon proposed semi-annual groundwater monitoring in June and December. Groundwater samples will be collected from monitoring wells MW1, MW2, MW5, MW7, and MW8. Recommended future activities will be discussed with the Department after each submittal. Semi-annual monitoring is required to be continued at the site until notified by the Department that a change in the monitoring plan is warranted.
