Summary

An active industrial site owned by Pella Corporation (formerly Rolscreen Company) located in Pella, Iowa. The site contains multiple buildings used to produce windows, doors, and other related products. In 1980, Rolscreen submitted a notification to EPA to identify itself as a large quantity generator of hazardous wastes in multiple categories at the Pella location. In the subsequent years, multiple occurrences of accidental releases and other incidents related to site activities were identified and addressed at the site. Potential contamination in soil and groundwater were investigated, and it was found that pentachlorophenol (PCP) and total extractable hydrocarbons (TEH) had been released into the soil and PCP, TEH, and other volatile organic compounds had been released to the groundwater, most of which was due to underground storage tanks utilized on site to store chemicals used throughout the manufacturing process. Following discovery of the contamination, Pella Corporation removed storage tanks, excavated contaminated soil, and performed a number of other remedial tasks to satisfy remedial requirements from the Iowa DNR as well as EPA. The site is currently under a consent order with the EPA and is working to implement institutional controls in the form of an environmental covenant.
