Summary
An industrial site located in Kellogg, Iowa that performed electroplating operations from 1973 until 1981. During this time, electroplating operations were completed using a variety of potential hazardous materials including cadmium, nickel, zinc, and trichloroethylene. Wastes generated during electroplating operations were sent to the wastewater treatment plant, where they were processed into a sludge that was then hauled away and disposed of. Disposal of the sludge occurred in a trench at the Midwest Manufacturing property as well as in a trench at the North Farm site, located approximately 2 miles north of the Midwest Manufacturing property. Subsequent investigations by EPA following cessation of activities at the site discovered contamination in soil and groundwater at the site as a result of the sludge disposal. The site is currently listed on the National Priorities List and monitoring is ongoing to ensure that human health and the environment are not endangered by the contamination plume in the groundwater.
