Summary
From 1949 to 1953 Salisbury Laboratories in Charles City disposed of solid wastes at the Shaw Avenue Dump, a municipal waste dump owned and operated by the City of Charles City. (After 1953 Salisbury disposed of their solid waste at the LaBounty site located immediately across the Cedar River to the West.) Sludge from the nearby Charles City wastewater treatment plant were also disposed of in the Shaw Avenue Dump from 1949 to 1964, a period when the treatment plant was receiving liquid wastes from Salisbury. Investigation of the LaBounty site lead to the discovery of groundwatert contamination at the Shaw Avenue site. The site became a federal National Priorites List (NPL) Superfund site in 1985. The federal EPA has been the lead agency for oversight of Superfund activities at the site. In 1992 the waste cells were excavated and taken off-site for proper disposl. Continued groundwater monitoring is being conducted.
