Summary
A former grain storage facility east of Rockwell that was in operation from the 1940s until the 1980s. During this time, carbon tetrachloride was used to preserve stored grain until it was banned. Investigations are currently underway to determine potential groundwater contamination as a result of the past use of carbon tetrachloride at the site. DNR is the lead agency and is partnered with USDA to conduct the investigation. An investigation was conducted in October 2024 to analyze soil, groundwater, and soil gas samples for the presence of the contaminants of concern, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform. Laboratory analytical results did not return any detections above laboratory detection limits of carbon tetrachloride or chloroform in any of the samples analyzed. A report submitted to DNR to discuss the results of the 2024 investigation concluded that no evidence to suggest residual contamination exists at the site and recommended no additional assessment at the time and DNR concurred with those conclusions and recommendations.
