A former canning factory, livestock sales barn, trucking company, and flea market located in Wapello, Iowa. Petroleum contamination was discovered in the soil and groundwater in the southeast portion of the property by the city, and subsequent investigations discovered the potential for contamination related to past uses of the site and the historic presence of a storage tank used to store fuel. Additional investigation discovered low concentrations of diesel and metals in soil and groundwater, but the contamination extent is limited and concentrations are at levels that do not pose a threat to human health and the environment under non residential uses. An environmental covenant has been recorded at the site to prevent residential use as well as the installation of groundwater wells. Once the investigation was completed and the environmental covenant was recorded, DNR required no additional assessment at the time and closed the site.
