Summary
On June 18, 2020, Gavilon experienced a one-million gallon release of 32% (32-0-0) liquid nitrogen fertilizer at its liquid fertilizer storage facility located in Dubuque, Iowa. Approximately 432,000 gallons overflowed secondary containment with a significant portion of that ending up in the Mississippi River. Emergency response efforts commenced immediately and included the excavation and removal of impacted soil and debris to the extent practical. Iowa DNR Contaminated Site Section took over oversite responsibility in July 2021.
