The week of February 24, 2017, we received a call from a property owner regarding contaminated soil. The property operates as a used car lot. Prior to this it was a jiffy lube. Currently there is a sump pump in the basement that is connected to newtons sanitary sewer. The City contacted the owner and required installation of additional sump pumps because of the large amount of groundwater the city was receiving in their treatment plant. When the contractor came to put in the sump, they found contaminated soil/water under the building when they opened the floor. soil samples where collected because years ago there was a tank farm across the street. The city has agreed to keep the current sump as is.
