Summary

The Gray Iron Foundry site is located at the 500 block of 12th Street, Marshalltown, Iowa. The foundry manufactured gray iron castings for industrial and commercial applications. The manufacturing process included the use of a cupola furnace to melt scrap metal for the castings. Dust from the cupola furnace exhibited hazardous concentrations of lead and cadmium. The owners declared bankruptcy in 1987 and the site was referred to Superfund. A preliminary assessment (PA) was performed in 1987 and sampling was conducted during the PA and again in 1992. The 1992 sampling event was in response to a citizen/local official's concerns regarding the building on the abandoned site. The sample results from both sampling events did not provide any evidence that a significant release of hazardous substances had occurred. The 1992 inspection found the site to be a physical hazard, but not eligible for Superfund involvement. A visual inspection in July of 1997 found that the foundry buildings had been razed, and that only a concrete slab remained. EPA designated No Further Remedial Action Planned (NFRAP) status to the site in 1997. No known monitoring wells were installed under authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act/Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (CERCLA/SARA). No further response under CERCLA/SARA is required. The site has been NFRAPed and archiving is appropriate.
