Summary
A cooperative in Rake, Iowa currently owned by Landus Cooperative that is operating as a storage facility for liquid fertilizer and liquid propane. In September 2008, a leak was discovered in one of the large aboveground storage tanks while 10-34-0 liquid fertilizer was being transferred to the tank. An estimated 10000-15000 gallons of fertilizer was released through a damaged spot that appears to have been caused by a lightning strike, and DNR was contacted by the owner to investigate the spill. Approximately 1 million gallons of impacted water was pumped from the surrounding drainage ditches and creeks to be land applied, and impacted soil was also excavated and land applied. Semi-annual groundwater monitoring has been conducted since 2008 to monitor plume stability, and no additional assessment is planned at this time.
