Summary

Historical records indicate that the site has operated as several businesses over the years, including several scrap/junk yards, a smelting plant, and a marina. The site appears to have first been developed in the 1940s as a junkyard and continued to operate as a junkyard/salvage yard until 1956. In 1956, the property changed ownership and was redeveloped as a marina, which was subsequently destroyed by an ice floe in 1962 and the former marina area was backfilled. After this, the site changed ownership multiple times and operated as a smelting company/salvage yard with a period of vacancy following bankruptcy in 1971. In 1974, the site was purchased and began operation as Remelt Industries, Inc. and has operated as such since that time. EPA and DNR conducted assessments in the 1990s which ended in no additional action, but a recent review has revealed that the site should be reassessed and will likely require remedial action due to elevated levels of lead and PCBs among other contaminants.
