Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Management

2024 - Fish Kills-Natural Causes: The city removed 1,800 pounds of common carp that died. Unsure of exact cause, but extreme high density of common carp, very hot weather and low water conditions.
2014 - Fish Kills-Natural Causes: On March 26 the Macbride fisheries personnel inspected dead fish along the shoreline. The fish were large gizzard shad that had died of natural causes during the winter. There were a several dozen trout and a few channel catfish also observed.
2011 - Fish Kills-Natural Causes: Low oxygen caused by blue green algae bloom caused a fish kill at Sand Lake in Iowa City (Johnson County). Several thousand bluegill and black crappie were killed.
