2/15/2017 Smithfield Foods employees provided the first response to the incident. They put down floor dry on the spill on the concrete to prevent further fuel from entering the culvert. Cura Emergency Services then took over responsibility for the spill. There was initially some confusion regarding the local contractor hired by Cura to do actual spill cleanup. Glen Lawres, Environmental and Incident Response, was on site at first. He deployed booms in the ditch to prevent further spread of the fuel. Cura then determined that he was not their contractor of choice. Environmental and Incident Response was then replaced with J Pettiecord from Des Moines. J Pettiecord responded with a vac truck, a small excavator and a sewer jetting truck. Before the end of the day on 2/7/17, they flushed and jetted the culvert three times and then vacuumed the ditch water. They picked up the contaminated floor dry and also collected some diesel impacted soils. The soaked booms were removed from the ditch and were replaced. They will come twice over the next couple of weeks to replace booms as necessary. Cura will provide a final written report after cleanup is complete. LORI RATTAY
