3/8/2022 3/7/22 - As I left the site, a county supervisor on the landfill board Diane Fitch ([email protected]) talked to me by phone about using an old Schildberg quarry across the road to stockpile and burn tree debris. She subsequently sent me a map of the site. I sent her the following response via email: This would be an acceptable site as long as you don't cause a nuisance and follow the following regulations for a municipal tree burn site: [I sent her 23.2(3)b] Have you considered using the east end of the landfill site for stockpiling and burning trees? You would have full control of the site and it would be easier to manage. The trees should be allowed to dry out before burning so smoldering is minimized. Also, burning should be done with smaller piles so it can burn out by the end of the day. In any case, the ashes need to be taken to the sanitary landfill for disposal or used for some other DNR-approved beneficial use. Have you considered grinding up the trees so burning would not be necessary? BILL GROSS
3/8/2022 3/7/22 - I visited the landfill after learning that a tornado hit the area. I met with consultant Doug Luzbetak, manager Marcia Beeler, and operator Alan Utsler. The scale house/office and equipment buildings were leveled. A portion of the scale blew away. Windows on some equipment were damaged, but most landfill equipment was operable. The Cass County EM trailer was being used as an office, but a FEMA trailer reportedly was on the way. Some records may have been lost, though most records were in electronic form but they had not been able to check them yet since they lost their computers. Items from the metal recycling area blew into nearby trees. The landfill continued to take in waste. The waste amounts were being estimated. A temporary scale was scheduled to arrive the next day.
