11/21/2019 I conducted a visit to the site as I hadn't been onsite since September 17, 2019, and I wanted to verify the status of the operation and make sure no leachate was leaving the site. I met Gary Chamness onsite and we walked from the eastern side of the pad, around the south side and over to the west side of the pad. While leachate was being channeled off the pad for draining purposes, it was not leaving the property. Rather, leachate is damned up and pumped into the east lagoon. The west side of the pad was draining well, as the drain pipe was dug up and ready to be replaced with new pipe. The compost pile was barely smoking on this day (literally just 2 small spots were smoldering). Windrows are still along ways off, still way too much liquid to be drained. They need to get the pudding like material mixed into the dry material which will be beneficial for a variety of reasons: stop the smoldering, increase the rate of composting, assist with controlled drainage, minimize odor and likely many more. The small leachate lagoons had 10' freeboard and the large middle lagoon had ~4' of freeboard. Lanes had been cut down the eastern side of the compost pad making access to the drain a bit easier. The excavator that previously caught fire was still stuck out in the compost and Gary figures they may have to lift the machine out with a very large crane. Two front end loaders were out working the pad (mixing material together). KURT LEVETZOW
