8/8/2012 Site inspection due to township search. Site had not been visited since 2005. There are 450 head of beef finishers and Mr. David Kooiker said that they are usually seasonal lots June to September. They have not guttered the buildings so the lots receive all the roof water and some field water from the north and east. They did add some cement settling walls with holes in the southeast corners that are to have slats in them to collect solids, but he said that didn't work for them, so the slats are at his home place. I explained that they needed to keep these settling areas clean and to use the slats. The lots and cement settling areas of the pens were very full of solids (photos taken). The other control they use is to plant the crops north south in this area to slow down the water and collect any solids that escape. They also put furoughs in the field during the spring to settle runoff. I cautioned him that he must keep his manure laden water out of the waterway/creek during snowmelt and rain events. At this time the creek was totally dry with no signs of solids near the creek banks. The Boyden wastewater lagoons are located just to the west of this facility and discharge into the creek to the west of where this facility would discharge. Mr. Kooiker sounded like he may talk to an engineer about some more controls and possibly expanding this site. He is aware that he may be a suspect site during rain and snowmelt. CINDY MARTENS
