7/20/2010 On January 10 2007 this office conducted a follow-up inspection at your feedlot located in Section 6 T85N R 42W Monona County. The purpose of the inspection was to determine if manure management controls had been installed and to determine if the structures were adequately settling manure solids for the feedlot. Responsible officials were not available at the time of inspection. During the inspection it was noted that there were two “pickett” type structures installed to control the manure runoff from the feedlot. It was also noted that manure solids were present on the downstream side of these structures. This indicates that the structures do not appear to functioning properly. It was further noted that the discharge from this feedlot flows under the adjacent highway and into an intermittent stream which then discharges into Maple Creek. It was noted that a discharge was not occurring during the inspection but is highly likely during precipitation events. Therefore it is strongly recommended that the facility contact either ISU Extension staff or NRCS staff to determine if there is some “fine tuning” that can be done to the structures in order to help prevent a prohibited discharge to a water of the state. This fine tuning may include items such as adjusting pickett spacing on the discharges or possible reshaping of the area in which the manure discharge from the pickett structures drains into.
