7/31/2012 On July 24, the Wright County Transfer Station had a spontaneous fire, reportedly caused by filter cake generated at the Goldfield Corn LP ethanol plant, a waste stream they have been handling at the transfer station without incident since 2006. The fire started in a trailer inside the south bay of the building, the trailer was then pulled out of the building, tipped over and the fire extinguished. The transfer station received little physical damage, but had a lot of smoke soot. On Saturday, July 28, another fire started in the north bay and engulfed a trailer, perhaps 30 tires piled outside against the wall, and several pieces of equipment that Service Master was using to clean the soot from the first fire. The building was structural steel with steel siding, but several of the ceiling beams are compromised on the north end. Transfer station employees attribute this fire to the same filter cake as reportedly caused the first fire. They presume something happened at the generator’s end to make a waste stream they had been handling suddenly become problematic. The transfer station proposes to reopen for business in the south bay on Friday; this appears to be feasible, noting that there is no power or fire alarm. Then they intend to start rebuilding the north section and, when that is operable (Thanksgiving?), they will move over there and replace the siding and roof on the south end. They will also replace the wash water tank (which was on the schedule before all this happened). The building will be on the same footprint and will have all new skin and several new structural members on the north end. I spoke with Manager Jim Meade and suggested that Chad Stobbe would likely be in touch regarding the rebuilding effort, but that he was away until August 6th. DAVID MILLER
