2/21/2023 During the preparation of this inspection it was determined that Tom McCarthy had inspected this permit in May of 2022. I conducted a follow up with Robin Nelson (E&S Specialist) about the requirements of Mr. McCarthy's inspection and the future plans of the CCR landfill (03-SDP-05-01) to which Robin responded the following: The Lansing Generating Station CCR landfill operating permit is set to expire in October 2023. Alliant Energy, on behalf of Interstate Power and Light (IPL), has been working with Mick Leat in the central IDNR office regarding final closure of the landfill, and an updated closure plan was submitted to the department in November 2022 and approved in December 2022. The landfill is scheduled to close this summer with substantial completion anticipated in October 2023. Documentation of closure activities will be provided to the main office and the field office following completion of closure, and post-closure care will begin. More information on anticipated closure and post-closure activities can be found in the plan approved by the department in December 2022 (see DocDNA ID #104674). Regarding vegetative growth on the previously capped portion of the landfill, the minor tree growth noted during the May 2022 IDNR inspection was addressed immediately and pictures were sent to Tom McCarthy. The landfill cap is routinely mowed to manage vegetation growth and inspected weekly. JASON GEARHART
