2/29/2012 I went to this facility on 29FEB12 to document that there were no storm water discharges from this operation. It had rained on and off for the previous 24 hours and was raining when I conducted the inspection. I spoke with CCC operator Kevin Dammen who stated that this entire area was a quarry in the 1950s and 1960s, and the CCC facility is within the limits of the old quarry. I walked the entire perimeter of the old quarry, which is 20-30 feet below original grade on the west and north, and perhaps 10 feet below grade on the east side. The bedrock consists of Devonian limestone/dolomite of the Cedar Valley Group which outcrops along the quarry walls. The limestone is weathered and heavily fractured. The topography in the CCC area is generally flat and drains to the west, into a series of interconnected low lying areas that in turn drain to the north. The quarry extended up to the Cedar River which borders the subject area on the north and east subject area, but they quarry operators had left a limestone ridge along the river, presumably to keep floodwater out of the quarry. The ridge is approximately 25’ tall and 50’ wide on the north reduces in height to perhaps 10’ as it follows the river around to the east. There was considerable ponded water in the bottom of the old quarry, but I found no surface water discharge points. See attached map. DAVID MILLER
