11/27/2019 As part of my fall of 2019 tour of MSW landfills in FO6, I stopped at the Iowa City Sanitary Landfill and met with Jen Jordan, Resource Management Superintendent and Jason, one of the Supervisor of Landfill Activities. Jen, Jason and I toured the landfill and discussed general operations of the landfill. Specifically, we looked at the working face (which looked good), the previously used cells, landfill gas wellheads, the flare, food waste/landscape waste composting, citizen drop off area. We discussed future expansion needs and opportunities for possibly opening an old closed cell by exhuming old waste, lining the cell, which would make a bad area into something good. We also looked at intermediate cover which looked better than it has in past visits, litter wasn't horrible, their borrow area on the far west side continues as that where future cells will be built. Leachate is direct piped to the City's WWTP. We discussed odor complaints, which had become a problem again late summer into the fall. Recycling operations looked fine. Overall, the landfill looked good. KURT LEVETZOW
