4/30/2025 On 4/28/25 Jackson County Transfer Station Staff reported a fire at the transfer station via the spill line. Possible contaminants reported were burning tires from the machinery and diesel in the on site equipment in the building. Water to suppress fire would enter a permitted lagoon and then discharge to a water way and eventually a stream. I went on site the morning of 4/29/25 and met with manager Frank Frieberg. The tires on the skid loader and endloader in the building were foam filled and did not burn, the diesel was not released either. Some foam was used but did not contain PFAS (per the fire chief). The lagoon was half full and did not discharge. The transfer station may be a total loss, as some of the steel trusses had warped due to heat. There was a pile of solid waste that was moved outside onto a gravel lot in order to extinguish it. Mr. Frieburg agreed to have the pile removed and hauled to a landfill in the next couple of days, before the next rain. Clinton and Dubuque counties have agreed to accept solid waste from Jackson County. The State fire inspector had already been on site, and video recording equipment had been retrieved. Once a cause of determination is made, and they settle with the insurance company, they will move forward with rebuilding. Mr. Frieberg is aware to contact this Department for permitting. CHAD KEHRLI
