10/30/2015 While on site at the Pattison Sand Company on 9/3/15 in response to a complaint investigation, I discussed the ongoing operational status of numerous items around the sand company property with Kyle Pattison and John Hendricks. Work on the train spur line up through the valley is now underway after several years in the planning. Crews are clearing some ground and surface mining sand in the train's proposed route. This will not impact the bluff with the Indian mounds and the endangered plant, Jewelled Shooting Star. The company as a whole is mostly surface mining at this time. The "new" underground mine is not currently being used as most of the available sand has already been removed. The "Willey" mine located west across Old Mississippi Road is not currently being used either as it was shut down by MSHA earlier this year until such time as Pattison's puts in better bolting and netting. It was determined that the length of bolts being used initially were not long enough to be effective. It is anticipated that the Willey mine will reopen later this fall. Tire uriel within the old mine will resume later this fall as things slow down for Consolidated Barge and Grain Company. The planned completion date for entombing the stored tires continues to be Spring 2016. The required completion date as per Pattison's Administrative Consent Order is July 1, 2016. DOUG HAWKER
