Hi Dan,

The ground is freezing back up again so I am requesting authorization to surface apply from facility #67247 – Prestage Farms site PI-358 located in the SW ¼ of the SW ¼ of Section 36, Jackson Township – T83N-R31W.

Prestage Farms of Iowa requests this authorization due to the abnormally cold conditions leading to an early freeze of the ground which is now preventing us from incorporating manure from this facility.  We have attempted to secure alternate manure storage at neighboring facilities but are unable to do so due to biosecurity.  

We would like to surface apply manure from this facility starting on 12/2/2014 and hope to finish by 12/7/2014.  The farmer we work with at this facility would prefer to surface apply all of the manure from the facility this fall, which is approximately 1,600,000 gallons.  This is due to weather uncertainties which could arise during the spring.  He has also indicated that he does not want equipment in his fields during the spring due to compaction concerns.

The facility has 2 separate barns on site.  We would like to surface apply manure at the planned injection application rate for each barn.  The north barn application rate is 3361 gallons per acre and the south barn is 3964 gallons per acre.  We feel these application rates are reasonable even for frozen ground, especially with the flat terrain in this area.  

Any and all tile intakes will be blocked during surface application, and will remain blocked for 2 weeks following application.  In addition, all surface application separation distance guidelines will be followed.

I have attached a plat map and an aerial image of the fields where we plan to surface apply manure.  The majority of the fields are very flat (4% slope or less).  A few areas indicated on the aerial in blue and purple will be avoided because they have slopes of 7% and 8%, respectively.  A 200 feet separation distance will be maintained around the drainage ditch that runs through the “Daughter’s 80” field indicated on the aerial map.  It should also be noted that we may have changed the field names from what you have on file to better reflect how the farmer refers to them.  All fields have P-Index values less than 1.

We are also adding the North half of the E. Perkins field into the manure management plan.  If you would like to see any of the soil tests, RUSLE2 or P-Index calculations, or manure easement for this ground please let me know and I can send to you.
