(02/16/2012) A leak in a transfer line caused porcine tissue (a dried animal protein) to be blown on the rooftop of the facility and the surrounding parking lot.  It was estimated that one ton of the material was leaked from the transfer system.  Upon discovery of the leak, the company contacted Environmental Management Services to perform clean-up.  Clean-up was completed by 1500 on 2-15-2012.  There was a small amount of the material (est. 20 pounds) on the parking lot and cars that could not be cleaned up.  The RP had questions on how best to handle.  All storm water from the roof and parking lot flows into a detention basin.  The drain for the basin always remains shut until needed to be released.  It drains to an unnamed creek.  I advised her to keep the gate shut and pump the liquid.  She said that she could run any extracted water through their pretreatment system and send to the sanitary.  I advised her that would be the best method of disposal since it could be high in BOD.  I also suggested that if there was any significant visible residue left in the basin that it be removed.  I also instructed her to collect a BOD sample the next time the basin needs to be emptied to ensure BOD is at an acceptable level.
