9/23/2022 The vapors subsided after about a half hour. The area is being checked with chlorine monitors. The chlorine (/acid?) in the containment was being pumped into a plastic-lined emergency lagoon on the south end of the site. They are working with Cargill staff on further actions. Mr. Haffner was working on refining the details of the incident and will report them when available. He will be calling the NRC as well. BILL GROSS
10/3/2022 092322-WCG-0920 follow-up on 9/26/22: I visited the facility and met with Dave Sample. he showed me the chemical fill pipes where the incident occurred. There are several fill pipes in the area which are labeled and locked. Mr. Sample reported the truck diver found the chlorine fill pipe unlocked and assumed that the was pipe to use without checking labels. Mr. Sample reported truck drivers are trained annually and will check on this particular driver. Inside the building, the fiberglass tank was broken on the top and bottom from the gas pressure. He reported a second chlorine tank was not affected. The concrete secondary containment was dry. I asked Mr. Sample to check the integrity of the concrete and metallic appurtenances. We then checked the wastewater lagoon to the south. The two plastic-lined cells appeared to be operating normally. Mr. Sample reported the chlorine that was pumped to the cells quickly diluted and vaporized. Local emergency management representatives were meeting with Ajinomoto staff for an after-event discussion. No people remain in the hospital. Mr. Sample will be sending a follow-up report. BILL GROSS
