1/4/2016 Plant Personnel with the assistance of the local fire department and Haz-Mat people from Cargill and Ottumwa applied soda ash to neutralize the material. There was some vapor coming from the material on the pavement and ground but the soda ash quickly knocked down the vapors (personnel were wearing protective clothing and using SCBA); afterwards much of the material was washed into a storm water holding pond. The material will be pumped from the pond and put through a wastewater treatment system (likely Cargill) to be neutralized. The affected soil will need to be removed or some type of abatement done. No acid reached a surface water body. BILL GIBBONS
