11/28/2012 From: Gastineau, Janet [DNR] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2012 2:49 PM To: Gross, Steven [DAS]; Petersen, Ted [DNR] Cc: Cretors, Dave [DNR]; Walters, Lisa [DNR] Subject: RE: Water Sample Results--Wallace Building The results of analyses from samples collected Monday are attached. As suspected, iron was quite high in the cold water samples. There appears to be some concentration of this contaminant over the weekend or extended periods of lack of use. One explanation for the lower level in the warm water is that the iron could be settling out in the hot water heater. Based on observations, as building occupancy and water use increases, the water begins to clear up as fresh water is drawn directly from the water main on the north side of the building. Although the “clear” water observed in the middle of the day in the middle of the week, for example, has not been sampled for iron, based on its clarity, it is likely to have lower levels. The level in the tempered water was 0.3 mg/L, which is equal to the secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL) set by EPA. SMCLs are set to give public water systems guidance on removing these contaminants to levels that are below what most people will find noticeable or aesthically displeasing. Iron, or any of the parameters analyzed from the sample collected Monday, are not health threatening at the SMCL; above the SMCL, even though the water is actually safe to drink, it causes an aesthetic problem. More information can be found at http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants/secondarystandards.cfm, including a table of secondary standards. Mr. Gross was provided with contact information for the director of distribution with Des Moines Water Works and has been encouraged to work cooperatively with the DMWW staff, as well as his own, with regard to complaints.
