5/19/2014 While in the area, I stopped at the foundry after hearing they were shut down for good. I knocked on the front office door, which was locked with no lights on. There were two vehicles in the parking lot, but no one around. The couple doors to the foundry that are located near the front office were also locked. I walked around the entire facility, noticed that the dumpster under the cupola dust collector was pulled and parked closer to Karr Avenue. The stack to the dust collector was mostly fallen in, which shows the state of disrepair the place was in. I ended up bumping into a former employee who was removing the casting forms from the plant. I didn't catch his name, but he said he'd worked there 35 years, was from Missouri, and drove a red Chevy pickup truck. He said the plant closing was in the works for the last year. He said that although the facility was making money and was busy, it took too much operation capital to keep the doors open. I asked him if he was aware of any environmental issues that i should know of, and he said that he wasn't aware of anything. I asked him where all the stockpiled foundry sand would be taken, he said he figured the same place the rest of it's gone over the years, "all around the county in ditches and ravines". With that, I left. KURT LEVETZOW
