11/6/2019 On October 4, 2019, I stopped at SEMCO to visit the landfill, talk to Bill Sloop, as i've not been to the landfill in quite a few years. We discussed various topics of the landfill. Bill thinks they'll need to construct a new cell in the next few years, whereas operator Brett Slaughbaugh hopes to construct a new cell in the next year. There were 2 working faces during my visit, both looked larger than I personally feel like they need to be given the incoming waste that SEMCO gets per day, but as long as they're getting good compaction and are able to cover, I guess it's not a violation. Bill even mentioned that we've commented in the past of our concern of spray-on ADC being too thin, but he contends that they're getting it sprayed on thick enough to keep litter from blowing. Just seems to me that two open working faces without 6" of dirt allows more rain to soak through the waste, resulting in more leachate to haul offsite for treatment. Litter fences were up and seemed to be effectively containing litter to the landfill property. Appliances are still hauled away by Weikert and Bill said he's been very happy with them. KURT LEVETZOW
