10/19/2023	I accompanied Mike Smith and Geoff Spain of the DNR LQB to inspect the 1945 landfill unit for possible final closure with an environmental covenant. We met with landfill manager Mike Ward, the Newton Public Works Director, and consultant Doug Luzbetak. We walked over the site and had these observations: Vegetative cover was good. We saw no leachate seepage or gas venting. At the south end we found some old lift stations and valve pits that need to be filled. In the central portion of the site we found some holes and culverts near the surface. In the central portion of the site there was a berm running parallel downhill along a waterway (should be laid out along a given elevation). Doug will write up an inspection report.
