12/23/2010 On 12/3/10, Dave Elias and I met at the landfill, along with the depts new FLIR Infrared Camera to search for gas sources around the landfill. This mission is in response to a continuous issue of dealing with offsite odor from landfill gases. The FLIR camera is calibrated to see gases that end in "ane" or "ene"....such as methane, butane etc. During the tour, we didn't find any gas leaks in the structure housing the flare (which we thought was good). We did observe gas coming from around several manhole covers, some from a lift station, and when we took the plastic covers off newly installed gas wells, the gas fumes were quite evident (the wells aren't yet hooked up to the flare). We observed an area that's trenched down into old existing garbage (where they're working on the new cell and needed to hook into existing leachate collection tile), garbage and leachate odor was present but no fumes were observed. So in summary, the visit was merely to help the landfill staff try to identify areas of gas escaping to the ambient atmosphere. The only trouble was it was very cold and windy that day....so we decided we'd try again on a warmer calmer day. KURT LEVETZOW
