2/16/2021 Brandon Patterson 11:12 AM (0 minutes ago) to me I was just working on a write up. This is very good. Do you care if I cut and paste some of it. JANET GASTINEAU
2/16/2021 Gastineau, Janet <janet.gastineau@dnr.iowa.gov> 11:02 AM (3 minutes ago) to molly.cass, bcc: Osceola At this time, the Osceola Water Works is going through some changes to the disinfectant in use. Normally the water system uses something called chloramines for disinfecting the drinking water. Periodically they switch to free chlorine (or breakpoint chlorination), which is a stronger disinfectant. Free chlorine is used while the water system prepares to flush the distribution system. Because of the weather, they have not been able to flush the system. Flushing the water mains improves water quality by removing sediment that slowly builds up in the water main over time. Osceola uses enough chlorine in the treatment process to keep the water safe for consumption. Right now customers can easily get rid of the chlorine taste and smell by filling an open container with water and keeping it in the fridge for drinking – much of the chlorine will leave the water overnight. The water system submits monthly operating reports to the Iowa DNR to demonstrate compliance with both minimum and maximum disinfectant residuals. If you contact the water department, they will be happy to come to your home or office to measure this residual. The switch between disinfectants was made in early January and, thus far, the system has been in compliance. Some customers are more sensitive to chlorine taste and odor and it can also vary depending on where a resident is in the distribution system. Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns. I like this video for explaining the differences between the two disinfectants, but your water works can also explain it to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqVPLjTpmr8 JANET GASTINEAU
