By copying Rob Allison on this reply, I am referring the matter to the Des Moines Water Works (DMWW) for technical assistance. Based on our records, DMWW is in compliance with primary and secondary maximum contaminant levels. However, premise plumbing can affect water quality. The Iowa DNR does not recommend consuming colored water and, as the landlord suggested, allowing the water to run will help ensure you are getting "fresh" water from the main rather than what may be sitting in the structure's plumbing. The DMWW representative may also have records to help determine the material used in the construction of the service line. Sidebar from one house plant enthusiast to another: I fill milk jugs with water and let them sit with the caps off so the chlorine in the drinking water can dissipate prior to use. I also use grow lights this time of year because there are fewer hours of daylight and what sun my plants do get is less intense because of the sun's angle; some houseplants just go dormant this time of year too.
