3/26/2018 We have been receiving several phone calls from residents in the City of Harlan concerning the odor coming from Essentia. The city has also been receiving calls. Here is a summary of what I sent to Essentia last week: We have been receiving a lot of calls about the town of Harlan smelling. Evidentially the city is also receiving phone calls. A couple of the callers have allegedly contacted their state representative also. Usually this time of year we receive calls regarding odor from lagoons due to the lagoons 'turning over' in the spring causing the undesirable odors. However, I've noticed it throughout the year, not just now. As you know, the DNR does not regulate odor. However, odor is usually an indicator of an underlying issue, possibly with the lagoons. Has Essentia changed operation, had an upset, or anything else that could contribute to the odors? Have the anaerobic lagoons been completely dredged? Are you still operating the lagoons as we have discussed? Here is the response I received: We have not modified our operation or had any major upsets that would contribute to the odor. We have not performed any work to our lagoons and we are still operating them as normal. I have been in contact with our waste water chemical provider and with our environmental engineering group. We will meet with them and assess what can be done to address the odor. ALISON MANZ
