1/22/2018 Lastly, just for clarification, on page 3 of my permit it lists several samples needing collection at the source entry point. Examples (Radium, IOC, SOC and VOC’s, Sodium and Atrazine) those are raw water samples, correct? Very few samples are ever going to be collected as raw and if they are, that would be assigned as operational self-monitoring (page 5, for example). Source/entry point (S/EP FROM WEST LAKE) is finished water after all treatment and before entering the distribution system. Based on recall, this would be the tap at the laboratory sink. 1/22/2018 Gastineau, Janet <janet.gastineau@dnr.iowa.gov> 7:55 AM (0 minutes ago) to Osceola 3rd question I have is regarding the new quarterly Nitrite sampling. Where at in the distribution do I collect this sample? It would be best if you did some special sampling in the DS to make that decision. We want you to have a sampling plan and select more than one site. The sites should be from parts of the DS that are most likely to have nitrification occurring. Use temperature and chlorine residuals, for example, to figure that out. You may select sites and change them as you go through the years if results warrant. There is no template for this monitoring plan, but a list of sites is adequate. Be sure when you collect the quarterly sample to split it between the certified lab and the monthly benchtop analysis for your self-monitoring. JANET GASTINEAU
1/22/2018 Gastineau, Janet <janet.gastineau@dnr.iowa.gov> 7:42 AM (0 minutes ago) to Osceola Hope you're on the mend after a restful weekend. Sounds like it's been pretty rough:( The water supply operation permit was issued 12/5/2017 so monitoring contained within it does not begin until the following month, which would be January 2018. The lab may have sent you the bottles, but that's their way of doing business, not the Iowa DNR's. There will not be a monitoring violation for the quarterly nitrite from the DS for the 4th quarter of 2017. from Brandon: It would appear I will be getting a violation for not collecting a quarterly nitrite sample. No excuse for not completing it, other than I assumed because of getting the permit after December 1st, that the sampling started Jan 1st. I didn’t realize I needed one for the last month of the last quarter. The lab called me Friday and I guess that’s what I get for assuming L. Usually the DNR sends out a sampling letter reminders as well. Maybe they didn’t do that, because of the timeline from when the permits were mailed. What do I need to do regarding this issue, I try so hard to not get violations. My board is not going to be happy with me. This is not a complaint, but a suggestion, I think it would be a lot more user friendly for operators if the new operating permit had a letter on top in the future outlining the new and additional sampling. If you don’t read it and reread it, it’s easy to miss something new. Also, would be way less confusing if the new permits started January 1. 3rd question I have is regarding the new quarterly Nitrite sampling. Where at in the distribution do I collect this sample?
