4/27/2017 On April 6, 2016 Metro Park West Landfill (formerly North Dallas Solid Waste Landfill) began to haul leachate to he City of Perry's wastewater treatment facility. In order to know how much leachate could be hauled, a pre-discharge sample was taken from the landfill's lagoon. The concentration result for ammonia is the determining factor for how much leachate can be hauled in a day to meet the ammonia mass limits. The pre-discharge concentration of ammonia from the lagoon was 263 mg/L which meant that the landfill could haul 20,000 gallons in a day. The City determined that the compliance point would be a sample taken from the 2nd truckload of leachate. The ammonia nitrogen result from the 2nd truckload was 1,900 mg/L which would violate the landfill's ammonia nitrogen mass limits (from the treatment agreement). The landfill immediately stopped hauling. Dave Gliem (City of Perry WW Supt.) was concerned with the high ammonia result and split the sample and sent it off to Test America. The result of the split sample with Test America was 251 mg/L. Then Mr. Gliem was able to determine that there was an issue with the ammonia probe and replaced it. The city of Perry uses an Orion Model 290 to test the ammonia. Mr. Gliem is going to continue to split samples until he is certain that the ammonia meter is accurately measuring the samples.
