Janet, Thank you very much for your reply. Is there an Iowa list of certified labs that I can have? I looked on the web site link you provided and see no lab listing. Thank you! Sorry for the lateness of this response. I was out of the office for a few days last week and still feel like I’m catching up on email. Des Moines has a history of nitrates in the source and finished drinking water. You can explore current conditions through their website http://www.dmww.com/water-quality/water-quality-data/. Only methods and laboratories certified by the state of Iowa for public drinking water are considered valid. Our regulations describe the MCL as 10 mg/L (as nitrogen). Same for nitrite 1.0 mg/L (as nitrogen) and total nitrate and nitrite is 10 mg/L (as nitrogen). See page 11 of 567 IAC 41 (attached). Please let me know if you have other questions. Janet, Would you be interested in responding to this complaint? From: William Brinton [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, June 03, 2016 2:24 PM To: McCoid, Corey [DNR] Cc: Jon Dyer Subject: Drinking water compliance STD? I was in Des Moines earlier this year on a farm monitoring tour, and happened to test the drinking water in my hotel using a portable colorimetric NO3 kit (probably Cd-reduction). It was off the top end of the scale (see image) so I brought the sample back overnight by air to our lab (we are a soil testing lab) and ran it the next day on our IC water test unit against a standard. It came back as 19.5 mg/L as N. Are the federal standards understood to be 10 mg/l as N or as NO3 – every time I look at the charts it is unclear if EPA is using N or NO3 basis. If you care to comment on my uncertified test result, I’d be happy to hear. I do hope the state continues to make progress on the nitrogen issues.
