7/6/2015 David Pitz called and stated there was wild parsnip all over the final cover of the closed areas and wondered if this was a problem. I indicated that as long as the final cover vegetation prevented erosion, invasive plants on the final cover were not a problem. However, I noted that wild parsnip roots are not nearly as efficient as grass roots at preventing erosion, and suggested he monitor the situation to make sure the parsnip did not completely crowd out the grasses. I noted that wild parsnip was a biennial and could be controlled, to some degree, by mowing every year before it went to seed, but that was their call. I also cautioned him about the phytophototoxic nature of wild parsnip sap. Mr. Pitz then stated that the might want to use spray heads to recirculate leachate instead of the hand-held hoses they currently use and wondered if he could do this. I stated that their recirculation authorization in the permit did not specify the method, so however they wanted to do it was fine. I noted that they should only recirculate when the working face was open. DAVID MILLER
