Protocol is written as follows for staff: 1. For a known bacteria problem: Ensure the water supply is issuing a boil water warning. Note systems with nitrate levels greater than 7 mg/L or nitrite levels greater than 0.7 mg/L should not issue a boil water warning since boiling will raise the nitrate or nitrite levels through concentration. These systems must issue a use alternative water source warning, which may include the use of bottled water (sometimes used for a factory or school), or a temporary closure of the system (i.e., restaurant or bar). For pressure loss or main break: Systems with nitrate levels above 7 mg/L, , or nitrite levels above 0.7 mg/L, should use a bottled water advisory due to the potential to increase the nitrate levels with boiling. I had a call from a lady in Pleasant Hill last week wondering about this. She was not being contentious, just looking for some facts.
