10/27/2014 Mike called with a question regarding pumping to waste of water from shock chlorinating a well. Mike said that someone from DNR, a Jason Butler, had told the facility manager that the water must be neutralized, but did not provide any guidance on how to do this. I told Mike that no Jason Butler worked for the DNR. I told him that there are a couple of options for dechlorinating water containing high concentrations of chlorine. One is to chemically neutralize the chlorine with sodium bisulfite using a diffuser attached to a hydrant. The other is to discharge the chlorinated water to the ground surface and let it naturally dissipate. This option can be used where runoff to a surface water or tile intake is not possible.
