10/7/2013 Update: Conference call of 9-27-2013 with Rob Saunders and Lindsey Motl. Excavated and repaired the fitting on Wednesday, 9-15. Fabricated a stainless steel fitting to go through the sidewall of the wetwell. Excavated affected soils, 10x10x8' deep (41 tons) and placed it in the active landfill. Will fill the hole with clean sand and dirt. PAUL BRANDT
9/24/2013 Rob Suanders, Alliant Energy, called on 9-16-2013 at 12:20 PM. (phone 641-226-4378) He reported they have a seepage at the landfill. It is not in the fill area, but on the south slope of the pond. There is no flowing water, but a wet spot about 8x8' They suspect it is some piping in the area. Rob left a voice mail message for me on 9-17-2013 at 8:20 AM. They are going to stop pumping leachate and see if the head in the fill area goes down. They are hiring a contractor to excavate the wet area and determine the problem. Rob called me on 9-23-2013 with an update. They did the excavation and found the problem to be a leaking fitting on the leachate wet well. The wet well is quite deep with a pump in the bottom. This pump is connected to a pipe that runs up through the wet well and exits through the side about 5' below the ground surface. The fiberglass fitting that goes through the wet well sidewall had broken, probably due to dry weather and the ground settling. They have Winger Mechanical lined up to make repairs by Thursday. They plan to excavate any contaminated soil and put it back in the landfil. PAUL BRANDT
