9/11/2013 Bikash called to report that they had received a couple of truck loads of denaturant contaminated with butane (2-4%). One of the trucks was off-loaded into the denaturant storage tank before this was realized. The entire contents of the denaturant tank were then pumped out and loaded into trucks (four truckloads) and the contaminated material was sent back to the vendor. New, uncontaminated denaturant was then brought in to refill the storage tank. Bikash wanted to know if they had violated the requirements of Subpart Kb by emptying and refilling the storage tank without making the 30-day written notice. I told Bikash that the intent of the 30-day notice in Subpart Kb was to make the DNR aware of emptying of tanks for inspection so that we could be present to observe if we wanted to. Since an inspection was not involved in this instance, the notification requirement was not triggered. I verified this with Dennis Thielen. GLENN CARPER
