7/15/2013	email from Cindy Turkle: Bill, I am not sure the procedure required, but I wanted to notify the Field Office that the South Dallas landfill experienced a fire at the working face this morning. They had the fire department assist with hosing it down while the operators excavated the area and smothered it will dirt. I inspected the site just after the fire was out. We also asked the fire chief to use the infra-red unit to look for any hot spots. None were found. The fire did not reached the tire chips or liner. Only a small amount of waste was burned. We are questioning how the fire is being starting. The first of the month, staff starting inspecting all loads carefully. In addition, staff at the working face have been spreading all loads prior to pushing them into the working face and compacting the waste. The fire chief indicated they have had problems with dumpsters being set on fire in the past. The landfill will be installing security cameras and will be doing after hour site visits. In addition, the landfill was approved to recirculate leachate and as some is generated, the working face will be sprayed periodically to keep it from becoming too dry. We will also try to pump storm water out of the ponds as it becomes available. We will implement as many security controls as possible to prevent it from occurring again.
