This is helping me with forming a response to my program director! It was provided to him and nothing more was necessary. If DMWW were to exceed the nitrate level in the finished water, the DNR water supply operation section would be contacted by the laboratory. WSO would work with DMWW on the public notification procedure. Prior to the request for mandatory language, DMWW let us know they were beginning use of the aquiver storage reservoirs in the western suburbs to manage the nitrate levels throughout the system. I did receive an email from the city of boone last week regarding an inquiry DMWW was making with them and the nitrate levels they are experiencing. Boone uses alluvial wells along the Des Moines River and was seeing levels between 3 and 4 mg/L. DMWW posts some WQ on their website…. http://www.dmww.com/water-quality/water-quality-data/ From: Lisa Walters [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, May 21, 2013 1:49 PM To: Fields, Chad [DNR]; Gastineau, Janet [DNR] Subject: Re: Des Moines and Raccoon rivers and nitrates I was wondering if you has heard anything about nitrate spiking in general in the systems that are in those watersheds. I didn't think it was likely to show except for those alluvial systems without adequate clay. JANET GASTINEAU
