4/13/2012 From: Gastineau, Janet [DNR] Sent: Friday, April 13, 2012 12:25 PM To: 'OSCEOLAWATER DEPARTMENT' Subject: RE: odor Odor’s one of the contaminants in the national secondary drinking water regulations, all of which are contaminants with aesthetic concerns. Since they are aesthetic issues, we’re not required to adopt them as we are with the primary drinking water regulations (contaminants with health concerns). In 40 CFR 143.4, the method for Odor is listed as Method 2150B in the 18th, 19th, or 20th editions of Standard Methods for the Analysis of Water and Wastewater. The units are “Threshold Odor Number”, or TON. (The old 1983 method bible, EPA Manual for the Analysis of Water and Wastes, which many water and wastewater systems have around, had it listed as 140.1, and this is similar.) How do we do this? Is it by what you smell or a numbering system? JANET GASTINEAU
