1/26/2011 From: Gastineau, Janet [DNR] Sent: Wednesday, January 26, 2011 3:44 PM To: 'McCurnin, Mike'; 'Smith, RW' Subject: FW: Iowa's DNR Field Office Compliance - Assistance Detail I have attached the department's spill guide, which says a hazardous condition exists if it leaves the property, which it did via the sewer. You did the right thing by calling to report. Would one of you please follow up with a brief written report as described on page 3 of the guidance and submit it to me in 30 days? Thanks. JANET GASTINEAU
1/26/2011 Due to a miscommunication between the delivery driver and operator on duty the delivery driver of our sodium hypochlorite solution overflowed a tank and 45 to 65 gallons was spilled in the nitrate removal building and discharged to the sanitary sewer during the day 1/22/2011. We are confident the drain in the building is to the sanitary sewer. The tank and floor were hosed down so there was some dilution. We didn't think to call when it occurred but our safety guy thought about it when he found out and decided we should let the DNR know. I told the callers that it didn't sound like a hazardous condition (didn't effect air, groundwater, or surface water) and was contained to the sanitary sewer, so notification does not appear warranted. I encouraged them to contact Des Moines WRA and let them know what happened and thanked them for calling. JANET GASTINEAU
